I am amazed by what it takes to leave the house these days; whether for school, work, a few hours at the farm or traveling away for the weekend. When did we all of a sudden determine that a full car is a happy car? And at what point did one bag of clothes give birth to 2 others, allowing everyone a 3-bag allocation? ☺ And we haven’t even begun to discuss all the electronics that accompany us daily and on our trips.
As we left for school today, I had three bags and both Gus and Lily had 2. The common culprits are my workbag, school backpacks, lunches and of course the gym bag. I am thankful I am not of the female demographic and have the necessities there as well.
Add a trip away from home where you think about packing a meal or two, snacks, beverages, extra clothes and any emergency items. Now it makes sense why it takes as long to pack as it does to enjoy the trip.
I honestly think we have become so habitual in our routines or at least I know I have, that “our things” and our way of living our daily life gives us comfort. To that end, we bring it with us. Would it be scary or liberating, to leave the house with the clothes on our back, money in our pocket and phone in our hand?
It’s one of those pieces of life that we all #balance. A few years ago, I began creating lists for every trip that was beyond the daily adventure. That has certainly helped me. I personally don’t think I will change and accept that it is part of life. The only consolation I can make is continuing to pack lighter, quicker and with less excess. I might even get down to 2 bags one day soon.
And in case you’re in need, I have generated some crazy efficient packing skills.
Have a great weekend … pack light
