Some days I walk into the gym with a fire and a mission to improve my physique with highly focused weight training that leaves me out of breath, fully pumped and feeling accomplished. Those workouts are intense, highly motivating and the ones we hope to replicate every session in the gym. The reality though is that is not sustainable.
What I believe are sustainable, are workouts that start with a set of goals and a strong focus and certainly no expectation that a new “highlight reel” to a bodybuilding DVD with smoke machines, mirrors and fake sweat will be made on that day. ☺ I think if we are aware of this, some of our best exercise experiences can start with those days that challenge us the most. All we need is a few minutes on the treadmill, elliptical or under the weights to begin visioning our goals and the reason why we are there. That is when we begin to find the extra.
If we can apply the “extra” to other aspects of life, I believe it’s really a pretty sound guide. While we all want every moment in life to go right, be perfect or feel like it’s memorable, that is not reality. Staying focused and thinking about our goals will always keep our mind on task. If you stray from that path, don’t let up or give in, as that’s when the extra might just kick in!
